Abele Tree House
A classic Edwardian Seaside Home, Abele Tree House stands in about 3/4 acre gardens, one of the last few remaining walled gardens in Budleigh Salterton.
Traditionally it was the Doctors House, remaining so until the 1980’s. The original house dated from around 1804 and during the reign of George 111 the house belonged to a Doctor Bedcott Adams , who is said to have allowed it to be used by smugglers, receiving payment in kind.
We were delighted to show Brian Hawkes, aged 94 and still living in Budleigh, around recently. He was the son of the doctor who lived in the house after it was rebuilt in the early 1906’s. Brian remembered how, as it was before the National Health Service, his father looked after two categories of patients- Panel and Private. Doctors treated panel patients for a small annual fee from the state and Brian was very clear, that these patients entered via the side door and the private patients, via the front door! The family had a 'live in' housekeeper couple and his mother was the dispenser (pharmacist) for the practice.
The walled garden, which is a mass of primroses and bluebells in the spring benefits from a very mild climate, so much so that Kiwi fruit grow in abundance on the south facing wall.
